21. June 6:00PM

Atelje A22 is pleased to inform the public about the promotion of the book “The Eyes of the Skin: Architecture and the Senses” by Finnish architect and theorist Juhani Pallasmaa, which will take place as part of the 19th edition of the Belgrade International Architecture Week — BINA 2024 “Echoes of Modernism,” at the Art Gallery of the Cultural Centre of Belgrade, on Friday, June 21, starting at 6:00 PM.

Following the successful presentation of the book at the National Museum of Montenegro in Cetinje and at the Radosav Ljumović National Library in Podgorica, we are delighted to have the opportunity to present this edition at such a prestigious event as the International Architecture Salon — BINA, stated the editor of the publication, Milica Janković. This represents a strong incentive for our future work and gives momentum to new publications we are diligently preparing this year, which will soon be presented to the Montenegrin and regional public.

As part of this promotion, the audience will have the opportunity to hear expert presentations by Prof. Dr. Slavica Stamatović Vučković, Prof. Dr. Milena Kordić, and art theorist Milovan Novaković. Their lectures will offer diverse perspectives on the book and mark the premiere presentation of this significant and influential work to audiences in Serbia. Representatives of the Embassy of Finland in Serbia, one of the sponsors of the event, will also attend.

We remind the public that “The Eyes of the Skin: Architecture and the Senses” is a seminal work of phenomenological interpretation in architecture that transforms conventional views of architectural thinking and practice. By focusing on the multisensory dimensions of architecture, Juhani Pallasmaa explores how the senses shape the human experience of space.

This book invites readers to reconsider their relationship with architecture and space, emphasizing the importance of emotional and sensory experience. Moving with equal fluency through the fields of architecture, art, and philosophy, Pallasmaa guides us on a journey through space and matter, encouraging us to open the eyes of the skin and experience the world around us more intensely.

Juhani Pallasmaa is one of the most influential and widely read living writers on architecture, the author of numerous books and scholarly articles in architectural theory. Since the mid-1960s, he has published 75 books and nearly one thousand essays in thirty-seven languages. As a lecturer and writer, his primary interests have focused on the meaning of the senses, experience, atmosphere, existential feeling, and phenomenological thought.

He has served on numerous international juries, including the Pritzker Architecture Prize jury (2008–2014), received many national and international awards, and holds honorary doctorates from six universities. He is an honorary member of the Finnish Association of Architects (SAFA), the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

Through cultural exchange and the publication of carefully selected titles in contemporary theory, Atelje A22 continues to contribute to the enrichment of the Montenegrin and regional literary and scholarly scene. “The Eyes of the Skin” has proven to be an indispensable title not only for connoisseurs of architecture, art, and theory, but also for all those seeking a deeper understanding of their space and environment.

The publication of this work was supported by the Ministry of Culture of Montenegro.
